Daily Jazz: MARC Madness

19 Mar

I don’t really get into college basketball. At all. Sometimes I get frustrated with the entire month of March because I’m tired of disappointing people who expect me to care about the NCAA.

Over at the library blog Agnostic, Maybe they’re turning March on its head with a library terminology playoff.  It you participate, remember to vote early and often, and may the best term win.

Part-Time & Temporary Library Jobs

10 Feb

There’s a thought provoking post over at In The Library With The Lead Pipe about the pros and cons of part-time and/or temporary library employment (as opposed to standard full-time). This interested me for two reasons – one is that I’m currently employed part-time in three departments of two libraries, so I was able to relate to a lot of the problems mentioned.

More significantly, though, I’m getting ready to graduate from IU-Indy’s SLIS program and I’ve been starting to look at job postings.  Till now, I’ve been focusing on the full-time positions and mostly dismissing the part-time ones.  Seeing the positives laid out like that, though, makes me think that I’d do better to include them in my search.

We shall see what we shall see, I guess.

I think I’m going into the right field.

‎1:50 – Patron calls w/question about accessing electronic resources from home. I give verbal directions on how to set up VPN.
2:10 – Patron calls back to say thank you b/c setting up VPN worked. My heart grows two sizes too large.

Wil Wheaton talks about me! Well, about my profession. Well, future profession.

29 Jan

If you read this blog, you probably know I’m in grad school for library and information science right now. There’s also a decent chance that you know that I refer to Wil Wheaton as “The Internet.”  He’s pretty dang cool – gamer, actor, writer, geek – and I love his blog.

So you should understand why I was excited by the title of this post.

It’s true, you know.

Librarians are awesome.

What Do Librarians Do?

20 May

From an in-class discussion today…

My group’s prompt was

As a librarian, you have the tasks of cataloging, tagging, shelving, and acquiring books and other artifacts (tapes, software, maps, etc.). Are you organizing data, information, knowledge, or wisdom?  Create a “cocktail talk” description of what you do without using the words books, library, documents, texts, story, volumes, shelves, materials, manuscript, file, tome, resources, or equipment.

Our answer:

We are information professionals; our job is organizing information and imparting knowledge to users.  Using whatever mediums or tools are appropriate, we equip patrons by giving them tools to seek the path to wisdom and enlightenment.
