Huh. I think that’s deus ex machina?

  • Most primaries in the U.S. are inherently anti-democratic

I’m not 100% sure, but I’m pretty confident that tomorrow will be the first party primary I’ve voted in.

n.b. – I’m specifically referring to party primaries. I’ve voted in local elections that are held at the same time as party primaries, and whose infrastructure party primaries ride on (I’ve always assumed that the states subsidize this aspect of the GOP and Democratic Party, but I realized earlier that I’ve never verified this).

When subjected to any amount of inspection, a system that privileges two parties ins general elections and effectively locks out independents and third-party candidates is inherently anti-democratic.

Also, a system that presents a general election as a showdown between two parties leads to least-worst voting in elections (“which candidate don’t I find reprehensible?”) instead of choosing between two or more candidates that most of the voters in an area have supported.

I’m a huge fan of open primaries, and also ranked voting. You may have heard some discussion about open primaries in California, where Democrats are worried that having too many candidates in some congressional districts will split their vote and lead to a general election that is just two Republicans.

    • 10 Clockwise Party candidates each get 8 primary votes
    • 2 Counter-Clockwise Party candidates each get 9 primary votes
    • 1 Digital Party candidate gets 2 primary votes
    • The general election consists of 2 Counter-Clockwise Party candidates despite the party taking 62 fewer votes than the Clockwise Party, and thus likely not representing the views of most of their constituents

In my opinion, not giving the two parties a bye into the general is a good thing, but a ranked voting system would solve this.

On the back-end, there are many ways ranked voting could work (instant runoffs seem most common but there are other options – see http://www.fairvote.org/); I don’t think there’s a “best” way so much as “all of these options would be better than the two-party least-worst dichotomy.”

The most common criticism seems to be that this would be too complicated for voters on the front-end; given that we’re currently in the middle of March Madness I’ll counter that if you can fill out a tournament bracket, you can handle ranked voting. If you can list your favorite ice cream flavors, or movies, or books, or anything else, you can handle ranked voting.

There are a lot of issues that I feel strongly about, that I think society is going to have to work through slowly.

    This isn’t one of those.

This is like changing clocks twice a year, where the only reason not to switch to a system that works better is inertia – except that’s not entirely accurate. The other reason not to change our how our primaries work is that it would weaken the two parties’ stranglehold on the American electoral system, and citizens might get to vote for the candidate we think is best instead of voting against the one who horrifies us.

I can see why the two parties would be against that sort of democracy.

  • yet another plea to advocate for social systems that prevent abuse instead of meme-hating on capitalism

bc of the magic of automatic reposting & my choice to follow an author on multiple platforms, i’ve seen the phrase “why psychopaths get rewarded in capitalism” several times the last couple days and it’s kinda grating for me, bc it feels like memified anti-capitalism instead of a coherent position

bc the thing about psychopaths is, they get rewarded in any system

bc they’re assholes who will take advantage of the system and harm others for their own gain

that happens in capitalism. it also happens in communism. and religion. and fascism. and democracy. and theocracy. and my guess is, also in anarchy (both socialist and capital-L-Libertarian flavors). hell, any group with two or more people, it’s a possibility.

psychopaths gonna psychopath. it’s a bug in humanity, not any one social structure.

Great characters, great story – go see it!

  • Twitter blip

Today I saw that an author I like had tweeted about something I care about, and I wanted to interact. So I signed up for an account, responded to their tweet, tweeted my own tweet, retweeted a couple things… and then noticed that the author’s automated block filter had blocked me, because with only one tweet and no profile pic it looked like an account solely created to harass people.

    So I deleted the account.

A party that requires that sort of defense mechanisms isn’t a party that’s worth being at.

  • Tribalism and Branding Among Groups That Don’t Like Trump

“The Resistance” is not the Democratic Party.

    “The Resistance” is not Indivisible.

Indivisible is not the Democratic Party.

“The Resistance,” as it’s commonly referred to, is like Anonymous – there’s no membership rolls, no policy platform. If you say you’re resisting, you are part of “The Resistance.”

There is a Resistance Party that has a platform, but does not seem to be 1:1 with people who consider themselves part of “The Resistance.” I’m not sure if they’ll be running candidates in elections, or if so whether they’ll be running as independents or as Democratic Party candidates.

This has all been on my mind lately as people (who act like they’re speaking for “The Resistance,” whether they’ve actually identified themselves as spokespeople or not) seems to swing between loving and hating the Democratic Party on a week-to-week or day-to-day basis. I think this is because many or most “members of The Resistance” think of themselves as Democrats, and think that “The Resistance” and “Democrats” are (or should be) the same thing.

Realizing that an organization that is not you and your tribe will have different goals and priorities than you do has two effects

    • You don’t feel betrayed when they don’t live up to your expectations
    • You learn to collaborate where you agree, and work independently where you don’t

The Democratic Party has the best interests of the Democratic Party at heart – that’s as it should be. Work with them when you can, work against them when you can’t. Remember that the victory condition isn’t “Democrats beat Republicans” but “elections have fair results, rights are protected” and so on.

  • “A failed state is a political body that has disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly”

I don’t want to believe that we’re at a point where the party in power is saying it’s “playing politics” for the opposition to demand they (those in power) do what they (those in power) said they (those in power) would do FOUR MONTHS AGO before they (those in power) get another extension, when they (those in power) have repeatedly delayed and postponed doing the thing that they (those in power) said that they (those in power) would do.

I don’t want to believe that many of my fellow citizens will believe them (those in power, who want a free pass to not do their jobs).

    Reality is exhausting.

  • CrossFit Open 2018 and rule 1.04

I can’t boycott the CrossFit Open this year bc I’m not affiliated with a gym (and am out of shape), but am sharing this in case you or your friends are:

Rule 1.04 (https://games.crossfit.com/rules/open) is transphobic, as is CrossFit Inc.’s refusal to engage with critics on this issue.

CrossFit Inc. wants the Games to be a legit competition, but they base their rules on unscientific assumptions about birth sex and gender (claiming that AMAB female athletes have a genetic advantage).

By comparison, a large and growing number of events – including the Olympics – allow athletes to compete under their identified gender and test hormone levels if there is a concern. I’m not in a position to say if this is the best solution, but when elite athletes have regular blood draws for drug testing (including CrossFit Games athletes) this seems vastly preferable, and doesn’t harm the vast majority of Open competitors – unlike rule 1.04
